18:14-16
However, David had great success in everything he did “because the Lord was with him”. When the Lord is with us the schemes of men cannot succeed. David’s success made Saul all the more afraid of him. However, all of Israel and Judah loved David because he led them in successful campaigns.
18:17
Saul offered David his older daughter, Merab. The “bride price” was simply for David to serve Saul and to fight the battles of the Lord. Saul’s hope was that the Philistines would kill David. This was rather illogical, having seen all the success that David had. However, when a man is in rebellion against God he will not act rationally. We see various evil movements in society and in the world. They can do much damage, but we should also know that they will also make foolish decisions as well. History teaches us this, and we see it in modern politics as well.
