18:10,11
An evil spirit came “forcefully” on Saul, and the spirit was sent by God. This demonstrates that all this happened according to God’s plan. “He was prophesying in his house”. Remember that right after Saul was initially anointed as king he prophesied, and the phrase “is Saul also among the prophets” went around (1 Sam 10:11). It is strange that he was prophesying while being bothered by an evil spirit. Ws he talking sense or not? David was playing the lyre to alleviate the symptoms of the evil spirit. However, the evil spirit was more powerful than the alleviating effect of the music, and Saul hurled a spear at David. However, David eluded the spear. In fact he did this twice.
18:12,13
Saul knew that the Lord was with David. He knew this because of the victories David had, and perhaps also because he managed to elude the spear. Saul also knew that the Lord was not with him. So Saul began to use subterfuge to try and get rid of David. He sent him away and gave him command over a thousand men. Maybe he hoped that David would be killed in battle.
