1 Samuel 18:1-4 - Jonathan became one in spirit with David

18:1

We now have the aftermath of the defeat of Goliath and the development of the hatred of Saul for David. David is a man grounded by his faith in the Lord, while Saul is an unanchored man. Heb 6:19 talks about our hope being an anchor, and James 1:6 describes a man without faith as one tossed all over the place. We see these two types of people in Saul and David. We also have Jonathan on the scene, who would play a vital part in the “battle” between Saul and David. We should remember that we have already seen that Jonathan was not overly enamoured with his father (1 Sam 14:29). Jonathan loved David as himself. There are some who try to claim that the relationship between David and Jonathan was homosexual in nature. There are no grounds for this at all, such thoughts are purely the product of a depraved mind.

18:2-4

Saul kept David for himself. David eased the demonic torment that Saul experienced, and had won a great victory for Israel. Jonathan made a covenant with David. So even in what was going to become a dangerous place to be, David had a vital friend. The giving of the robe was a great honour.
