1 Corinthians 10:14-17 - Flee from idolatry

10:14

Paul is now going back to the original question of eating food offered to idols. We should have nothing to do with idols or idolatry. So far from demonstrating how clever they were in saying idols are nothing, so we can eat what we like, they would actually be displeasing God.

10:15

Paul now seems to soften his approach, he is not writing the Corinthians off as no hopers, but as people who are mistaken, but can be put right. He speaks to them as “sensible people”, people who can judge for themselves. And he is about to talk about the Lord’s supper, in order to make them realise why it is so important to have nothing to do with idolatry.

10:16,17

Paul seems to be getting them to consider what sharing in the Lord’s supper means. So he says that when we drink the “cup of thanksgiving”, i.e. the wine, we are participating in Christ’s blood. Likewise, when we eat the bread we are participating in Christ’s body. So the Lord’s Supper is a participation in the death of Christ. Moreover, although we are many, we all share the “one loaf”, we are all identifying with Christ, we are one body. So, going back to the start of the discussion, the “weak” and those who “know” are the same, are all part of the one body. So those who considered themselves clever have no grounds for considering themselves to be on a higher level than those who they considered to be “weak”.
