17:41-44
The Philistine approached David. “The Philistine” is how David saw Goliath, he was not impressed by the reputation that Goliath had. He was an enemy of God and that was all that mattered, and that meant God would defeat him. Goliath was not impressed with David at all. He, like the Israelites, was judging by outward appearances, so thought David was nothing at all, and was easy meat. Goliath used the names of his gods, and thought killing David would be easy.
17:45
David knew that his strength was in the name of the Lord, and he declared this to Goliath. We can be reluctant to use the name of the Lord when dealing with secular powers. Maybe we should be less reluctant. For often this means we are relying on our own strength and wisdom to win arguments, rather than relying on the Lord Himself.
