1 Samuel 17:52-58 - Whose son are you?

17:52-54

The men of Israel who had previously been cowed with fear for several weeks found courage. They rose up and pursued the fleeing Philistines and killed many of them. On returning from killing the Philistines, they plundered the Philistine camp. David brought Goliath’s head back to Jerusalem (this refers to a suburb near the city of Jerusalem), and put his weapons in his own tent.

17:55-58

We now get a rather strange event. Saul asks Abner “whose son is that young man?”. If we take the accounts as chronologically ordered, then Saul has already hired David as his musician, and agreed to let him fight Goliath. So the question doesn’t make a great deal of sense. A possible explanation is that David was such a minor part of Saul’s court. Whatever the case, David was brought before Saul, and he brought Goliath’s head with him. David tells Saul that he is the son of Jesse.
