5:17,18
So we are not to be foolish. Paul is making the same point over and over again. We are not to be drunk on wine or beer, but to be filled with the Spirit. Who or what is leading and directing our lives? Alcohol can lead us to do the most foolish things. The Holy Spirit will lead us in the will of God. We need to understand what the Lord’s will. We can live life as the blind, or we can live it as those whose hearts have been enlightened by the Spirit of Christ.
5:19
Instead of doing each other down, trying to prove how clever we are, we are to address one another with “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs”. We are to be “making melody to the Lord in our hearts”. One way lives out of self, seeking to boast about self, the other way lives out of humility, honouring the Lord in all things. It should be obvious which is the better way.
