2:7
Moses then reminds the people that God has watched over them and looked after them all the years since leading them out of Egypt. This was even during the long periods of disobedience. Israel deserved nothing, but God still provided for them. We do well to remind ourselves of the times that God has provided for us. Our natural tendency is to think that we are at the mercy of events, that God has forgotten us. This is what Israel frequently did, and it caused tremendous trouble for her. We should dwell on God’s kindness and learn from it.
2:8,9
Israel duly went past Edom. They then travelled along the desert road of Moab. The Moabites descended from Lot, as a result of an incestuous relationship (Gen 19:30-38). So neither Moab nor Edom were “holy” nations, they came out of disobedience. Yet God still protected them to an extent, and had given land to them. So Israel was commanded not to attack Moab, for God would not give them any of Moab’s land. Again we see the sovereignty of God in determining who gets what land. This does not mean Israel had nothing to do, rather she has a responsibility to live in the light of God’s sovereign decree.
