Deuteronomy 1:38-46 - We have sinned against the Lord

1:38-40

Instead of Moses, Joshua would lead the people in. It seems that there was some bitterness in Moses, but he did not let this consume him. He encouraged the people to follow Joshua, knowing that Joshua was the one that the Lord had chosen to lead the people into the Promised Land.

One of the claims (fears) the spies had raised was that their children would be slaughtered if they tried to enter the Promised Land. This was complete nonsense. In fact, it was the children who would eventually enter the Land. If we are guided by fear then our thinking becomes skewed and illogical.

1:41-46

The people were told that they would all die and would spend their time wandering about the desert. They didn’t like the sound of this, so they suddenly decided that entering the Promised Land wasn’t such a bad idea after all. So they prepared to go up and fight. God told Moses to tell the people not to do this. In keeping with past form they refused to listen. They did not appreciate that everything depended upon the Lord. If they had gone into the Promised Land in the first place they would have conquered the land, but now the Lord had told them not to go in. So no effort on their part would enable them to win. The people persisted in their stubbornness and were indeed defeated.
