Those who were ”indignant” claimed it was because of their concern for the poor. This was a load of nonsense. In Judas’ case it was because he missed the chance to pilfer some money. For others it may have been because they were offended at what the woman did. Jesus points out that “the poor you will always have”. They could have given more money to the poor at any time. However, they did not appreciate the importance of the time they were in at that moment. “You will not always have me”.

Without realising it, the woman was preparing Jesus’ body for burial. As noted earlier, the woman almost certainly did not realise the full significance of what she was doing, though possibly she did. She acted out of adoration and love for Jesus. She had done something, her detractors had done nothing.
