10:43-45
So instead of wanting to be the greatest (in worldly terms), they should seek to be the servant. Indeed, “the slave of all”. Jesus Himself, the Son of Man, is the supreme example of that. He came to serve, not to be served. Most of all, He gave “His life as a ransom for many”. We should not dwell too much on whom He paid the ransom to, that tends to lead to all sorts of problems! Rather the emphasis should be on the fact that He has set us free by the blood that He shed.
10:46
This is the last of the healing miracles recorded in Mark. Jericho is not the ancient city taken by Joshua, but a new city. Matthew and Mark have the miracle occurring as they are leaving the city, whereas Luke has it as they are entering the city. Perhaps the most likely explanation is that one is referring to the new Jericho and the other to the old Jericho. This is the only healing incident in Mark where the person healed is named. It is possible that Bartimeaus was part of the early church, which would be consistent with 10:52.
