Mark 11:8-11 - Hosanna!

11:8

The people were enthusiastically spreading their cloaks or branches on the road. They were welcoming the king, expecting great things. The problem was that they expected Jesus to defeat their enemies, not realising that we are all, by nature, enemies of God. We needed to end our rebellion and to receive mercy.

11:9-11

As well as the palm branches, they shouted their praise as well. They shouted “Hosanna”. This became an expression of praise, and that is how we tend to think of it. But it actually meant “Save us now”, or something similar. The people wanted to be saved from the Roman oppression, when what we most need saving from is our enslavement to sin. Jesus went into Jerusalem and to the temple courts. He surveyed the scene, and then went to Bethany with the Twelve.
