6:1
We now come to the building of the temple itself. The temple began to be built 480 years after the Israelites came out of Egypt. It is possible that the 480 figure is symbolic in that it represents 12 periods of 40 years, each period representing one generation, xone for each tribe. Or it may just be the period of time.
6:2-10
We now get a number of architectural details. One cubit was approximately eighteen inches. So the temple was roughly 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 30 feet tall, or 30 m x 10m x 10m, approximately. So while a reasonable size, the temple was not enormous. Temples at the time were not designed to hold vast numbers of people, but to reflect the nature of the deity. In this case it is the splendour of God that it seeks to represent.
