11:17
The two quotes here come from Is 56:7 and Jer 7:11.Jesus gave this teaching in the outer court, i.e. the area accessible to all, not just the Jews. Schnabel sees this as being symbolic of the gospel going to the nations. The temple clearing in John 2 is quite different in the focus of the teaching, more evidence that there were two temple clearings. The Isaiah prophecy focuses on salvation going to all nations, not being exclusively Jewish. The traders needed to be cleared out in order for it to become a “house of prayer”. Moreover there would no longer be any need for the selling of things for sacrifice any more.
11:18
The chief priests and teachers of the Law heard Jesus’ teaching and saw it as a threat to their authority. So they were looking for a way to kill him. “They feared Him, because the whole crowd was amazed at His teaching”. It wasn’t just the content of his teaching that concerned them, but the popularity He had, the people were amazed at his teaching. Today he may have been referred to as a “populist”, though the teaching He gave was far from easy.
