1 Kings 7:1-51 - Gold

7:1-12

The description of the temple is interrupted by a description of the building of Solomon’s palace complex. The palace took almost twice as long to build as the temple, it is much larger, and in some ways more ornate. One could see this as Solomon devoting more time to his palace than to the Lord’s temple. Or one could see man’s attempts at self-agrandisement requiring much more effort than the Lord’s natural glory.

7:13-46

We now return to the temple, with the focus now on the temple furnishings. The man brought from Tyre, Huram (or Hiram), was not the same Hiram as the king of Tyre. I will be perfectly honest, and admit that the rest of this chapter does not really excite me. What we do see is attention to detail, and God’s provision. The most important point is that God’s promises to David are “fulfilled”, noting that as the writer of Hebrews says, these things are only a shadow.

7:47-51

There was an abundance of gold, this is why they did not bother to weigh bronze. While bronze is of value and in normal times is worth weighing, when gold is in such abundance there is no need. The whole point was that the promise to David was fulfilled.
