Mark 11:12,13 - Figs!

11:12

There are two incidents interwoven here. The temple clearing is sandwiched between the fig tree being cursed, and its being dead. This is important for appreciating what was going on, and I found the commentary by Schnabel very helpful. The account begins with our being told that Jesus was  hungry as they left Bethany. This is a reminder that it is the Son of God made man who is heading for the cross. Jesus was fully human, as well as fully God.

11:13

Fig trees apparently give two harvests of figs. The early figs develop from the green knobs on the old branches, ripening in late spring. The summer figs grow on the new branches and are harvested in late summer and early autumn. It is the early figs that Jesus was looking for, but there was no sign of the,, only leaves.
