Mark 10:33-35 - We are going up to Jerusalem

10:33,34

Jesus then gives them a very clear explanation of what was going to happen. There wasn’t just the risk of  danger, but the certainty of “bad things” happening to Jesus. He refers to Himself as the Son of Man, Jesus was on a mission. These things were not just things that might happen to Him, but things that were meant to happen to Him, the very reason He had been sent by the Father. The things foretold here did happen, and had been foretold in Isaiah 53. Note that the Jews and the Gentiles were involved in all this. The Jews would condemn Him to death, but the Jews did not have the authority to execute a man, only the Roman authorities could do that.

10:35

We now come to an extremely off-colour request. James and John come asking Jesus “to do for us whatever we ask”. This in itself is an extraordinary thing to do. In the parallel account in Matt 20:20-28 it is their mother who makes the request. What I think happened is that the mother actually made the request, but James and John put her up to it. Whatever the case, Mark (who was writing for Peter) saw James and John as being the ones really making the request.
