3:26
The woman whose child it was, was horrified and pleaded with Solomon not to carry out the deed, but rather to give the child to the other woman. She would rather not have her child, but see him live. But the woman who was lying was quite happy to see both of them deprived of their child. So we see one woman deeply caring and truly loving her child, and the other completely heartless and evil.
3:27,28
Solomon then ordered that the child be given to the first woman, the one who was not prepared to see the child die, even if that meant she could not have her child herself. Solomon’s threat to kill the child was presumably not something he actually intended to do, but done to determine the truth of the matter. It reminds me of when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the purpose was to reveal what was in Abraham’s heart. To reveal it not to God, for God surely already knew, but to Abraham. News of this incident spread throughout the land, and they recognised that Solomon truly had wisdom from God to rule the land. Small matters can reveal important truths about a person.
