3:16-22
We now come to what is probably the most famous incident in Solomon’s life. Two prostitutes came to Solomon. Before we go further, consider the fact that prostitutes had access to the king, neither you nor I could have direct access to the ruler of our nation. They then explain the situation that they both had a baby, but one of the babies was now dead, and they both claimed that the surviving baby was theirs. The story is presented somewhat more eloquently than my rather terse description. It is presented as a real life situation.
3:23-25
Solomon recognised the situation as being the word of one woman against the other. DNA tests were not available in those days, so there was no obvious way to resolve the issue. So the king used his wisdom and asked for a sword to be brought to him. He then gave his famous order for the child to be cut in half, and one half to be given to each of the women.
