5:1
Before Solomon was born, Hiram had provided timber for David’s palace (2 Sam 5:11). So there were good relations between Hiram and David, and once he heard that Solomon was David’s successor he sent envoys to Solomon, wishing to continue good relations.
5:2-5
Solomon replied very favourably. Solomon’s priority was now the building of the temple. Solomon also explains why the temple had not yet been built. David was too concerned with dealing with wars waged against him “from all sides”. “He could not build a temple ... until the Lord put his enemies under his feet”. This reminds me of the words in 1Cor 15:25, “For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet”. Obviously the temple built by Solomon was THE temple, and Solomon was deeply flawed, yet even so there are, as Hebrews puts it, a shadow of the things to come. So Solomon is now fulfilling the promise to David.
