Mark 11:14-16 - He overturned the tables

11:14

Jesus then cursed the fig tree, saying “May no one ever eat fruit from you again”. Now on its own this seems to be a somewhat random thing, but seen prophetically it makes more sense.  The fig tree can be seen as representing the temple religion. It had the trappings of the temple, but was not producing fruit. In the future no one was to seek God through the temple religion.

11:15,16

We now come to the intervening act, Jesus’ clearing of the temple. John reports a clearing of the temple at the beginning of His mission. Many say that John is actually reporting the same incident as here, but has moved forward in his account for theological reasons. I am very much of the opinion that such ideas are complete nonsense. The accounts have significant differences, but as we are not in John’s gospel here we will not dwell on that point. Jesus was carrying out His actions in the outer court. Schnabel points out that there was no reaction to Jesus’ actions from either the Jewish or Roman authorities.
