10:39,40
“We can”. These are the most naive words they could utter. But in fact, they would drink the cup. What they thought they could do, just as Peter thought he could die for Christ, was nonsense. They could not do these things in their own strength. But through the cross and the Holy Spirit they would indeed be able to suffer and even die for Christ. Jesus then states explicitly that even He did not have the authority to decide who was at His right or left. The two thieves had already been chosen.

The other ten were indignant with James and John, but when we feel self-righteous there is usually something we need to learn. Yes, James and John had sinned, but the same root resided in all the disciples and needed to be removed. So Jesus gives them some very important teaching. In the world to want to have the best positions is important if we want to “get on”, but that is the world's kingdom. Things work differently in God’s kingdom.
