11:19-21
Jesus and His disciples left the temple in the evening. The next morning they see the cursed fig-tree “withered from the roots”. This was miraculous, for such a thing could not happen so quickly by natural means. Peter remarked on what had happened to the fig tree.
11:22-25
Jesus addresses the amazement, telling them to “Have faith in God”, and then expounds a little more on faith. Amazing things can happen through faith. This teaching is not giving us carte blanche to ask for anything and to receive it, but means that when we walk in the will of God, doing the will of God, we can expect things to happen. This fact comes out most clearly in John chapters 14 to 16, where there are similar promises. They are all given in the context of doing the mission of Jesus. There is also the caveat at the end concerning the importance of forgiveness.
