Isaiah 53:5 - He was pierced for our transgressions

53:5
The end of this verse, “by His wounds (or stripes) we are healed” is often quoted in the context of physical healing. This is a misuse of Scripture. The preceding text in this verse itself makes it clear that the wounds we are healed of are the wounds of sin. Jeremiah 6:14 and 8:11 speak of the wound of the people, and it is quite obvious there that this is in the context of the people’s sin. Peter says “by His wounds you have been healed” in 1 Peter 2:24, again quite clearly talking about our sin. Jesus Christ went to the cross because of our sins, our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that should have been ours was laid upon Him. Has this anything to do with healing then? Yes, for the root cause of all sickness is our sin. This does not mean any sickness we have is a direct result of some sin we may have committed (though in some cases it might be), but sickness came in because of original sin. The cross has paid completely for our sin, so sickness no longer has any right to be in our bodies. So does that mean we should never be ill? No. Just as the cross perfectly conquered sin, we receive some of the fruit of that now, but will not enjoy the full fruit until Christ returns. Likewise, we will receive some healing now, but perfection will not arrive until Christ returns.
