10:5
There are many arguments and pretensions that set themselves up against the knowledge of God. If you listen to debates on Christianity you will hear many of them. For example the argument that the universe and life within it just came about by chance is an argument against the knowledge of God. If we are just the product of random chance then that has a profound effect on how we view life and how we view ourselves. If, on the other hand, we believe that we were created on purpose, for a purpose, out of love, then that radically alters how we view ourselves, and how we seek to live our lives. These things are pretension, they pretend to offer an explanation of how things work, but they are just pretending. So we demolish arguments. Apologetics (the defence of the faith) is not the be all and end all of evangelism, but it is an important part of it. We take thoughts captive to make them obedient to Christ. This is not brainwashing, but reasoned argument. As an example, science is often set up as being opposed to God, or even disproving God. In reality the Bible provides the foundation and the mandate for doing science.
10:6
Remember that back in 10:1 Paul was answering the charge of being timid when face to face, but bold when far away. Here he is declaring that he will indeed punish “every act of disobedience”. He will do this “once your obedience is complete”. He had no wish to punish anyone, so is giving them ample opportunity to get their act together. “Punishing” here would probably mean expelling people from the church, “giving them over to Satan”.
