52:2
“Shake off the dust ..” It is the Lord who brings salvation, without His action, His initiative, there would be no hope for us. But His salvation also calls us to take action. They were so used to living in exile, living in Babylon. Any change is always difficult, even if our current circumstances are far from ideal. But they needed to shake off the dust, to get up and leave. As it happens a relatively small percentage of them did return to Jerusalem. I think it was about 50 000 in total. They were not just to shake off the dust, they were to rise up and sit enthroned. Remember that the father put on a rich garment on the returning prodigal, and put a ring on his finger. They were to free themselves from the chains. “Daughter of Zion, now a captive”. God had not forgotten their present circumstances, He was not unaware of their plight! God’s salvation enables us to be free of our present captivity.
