12:35-37
Having spent time responding to various questions, Jesus now takes the initiative. Psalm 110 is one of the most oft-quoted Psalms in the New Testament, and was recognised as a messianic Psalm. The general teaching was that the Messiah would be the Son of David. Now this was true up to a point, but it meant the people were expecting a military messiah, someone to rescue them from the Romans. Jesus is trying to get them to think beyond that. Their thinking was severely limited and skewed. Likewise, a person today may think financial, health, work or relationship problems are the most important thing that matters in their life, and they look to Jesus to sort these things out. Now, these things are indeed important, but the biggest and most important issue in anyone’s life is our sin. That is what we most need saving from. Jesus quotes the bit from Psalm 110 that says “The Lord said to my Lord ...” and Jesus points out that if David called him Lord the messiah must be greater than David. The people were delighted with Jesus’ teaching. The “common people” often have more sense than leaders, and are far better at recognising rubbish and true wisdom than supposedly learned people.
