12:32-34
The man replies “well said teacher, you are right ...” Now to us this seems as if the man is being rather presumptuous and full of himself. This is the Son of God he is speaking to! However, this could just be a cultural reaction on our part. For the man adds “this is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices”, a point made on a number of occasions in the Old Testament, and then it says “Jesus saw that he had answered wisely. So while it might strike us as being a bit bold, Jesus sees some good in the man. Jesus tells him “you are not far from the kingdom of God”. So why has Mark put this in? Maybe he is showing that while there was much blindness and outright opposition to Jesus from many of the Jewish religious leaders, there were also those who did have some inklings of the truth.
After this people saw that asking Jesus questions was a dangerous business! So they saw sense and stopped.
