24:4-6
We now get a rather lurid description of the devastation. The heavens and the earth are involved in this, but this is not a random act of vandalism upon God’s part. People often object saying “why does God allow suffering”. In these objections the fact of human sin is never taken account of. In verses 5 and 6 we get the reasons for the devastation. The earth has been defiled by its people. We are responsible. Now the environmentalists of today may well agree with that, but the reasons are different. “Therefore a curse consumes it” A curse in the Bible is usually “God’s judgement upon man’s sin”. The best thing we can do for the environment is to live for God.
24:7-11
The description of the devastation now continues. The new wine dries up, so all merrymaking comes to an end. There is no rejoicing or celebrating. Alcohol fuelled revelry is seen as a sign of a society that is enjoying itself, but all rejoicing and merrymaking will be gone. The cities will lie desolate.
