Isaiah 24:17-23 - The earth is broken up

24:17-20
Isaiah sees no respite for anyone. If someone flees they will fall into a pit, if someone climbs out of a pit will be caught in a snare. In short, there is no way of escape. The earth itself breaks up, and all this is a result of the rebellion of the people. The greatest thing we could do for the environment is to obey the Lord!

24:21-23
The punishment is truly universal, it will affect rulers here on earth, together with rulers in the heavens. The view assumed by this verse is relevant to understanding Ephesians when it speaks of rulers and authorities and the heavenly realms. All the rulers will be herded into dungeons. While this is going on the Lord will reign upon the earth from Mount Zion, and with great glory. This has significant relevance for understanding the millenium as talked about in Revelation. We need to appreciate the Old Testament imagery used in Revelation, and indeed throughout the New Testament.
