9:32
As per usual the disciples did not understand. It was not until after the cross and resurrection that they began to understand. When preaching we need to appreciate that it is only the Holy Spirit who can give people understanding. We should seek to preach and teach well, and clearly, but we are dependent upon the Lord for “success”. Normally the disciples seemed to be quite happy to ask Jesus to explain something, but on this occasion they were afraid to ask. This may be because of the reaction that Peter got the last time.
9:33,34
Jesus became aware that they had been arguing about who was the greatest. Given that Jesus had just been teaching about His suffering, this seems a little strange. Maybe it had something to do with three of them, Peter, John and James, having been taken up the mountain with Jesus?
