2 Samuel 23:13-39 - The Thirty

23:13-17

An incident recounted earlier is the time when David was thirsty and the three put their own lives at risk in order to obtain water for David. When they returned with the water, rather than drinking it himself, David poured it out to the Lord. Rather than being a rejection of the three, it was a recognition of the act they had performed, and David did not consider himself worthy of such devotion, only the Lord was worthy. David had many faults, but pride does not seem to have been one of them. The whole incident reminds me of Mark 9:41.

23:18-23

We then get an account of deeds by Abishai and Benaih. Their exploits were also great, but were not counted as equal with the three. They are a little like Andy Murray compared to Nadal, Djokovich and Federed, if I may use a tennis analogy.

23:24-39

If you have read a lot of my stuff, you will know that I really don’t like lists, this is a failing on my part, not the Bible’s! Here we have a list of members of the “Thirty”. They were significant, but not as great as the Three. We are also told that there were thirty seven in all.
