9:19
“You unbelieving generation ...” It is not clear who these words are directed to, though it would seem that it is the people in general. There seems to be an implicit assumption behind all this that the people should have had enough faith to deal with the situation. 9:29 seems to count against this, but the implication of 9:29 would then be that the people should have prayed to the Father, and the boy would have been healed.
9:20,21
The boy was brought to Jesus, and the demon, on seeing Jesus, threw the boy into a convulsion. The boy then fell to the ground and was foaming at the mouth. Jesus seems to be unperturbed by this, and questions the father. The boy had been like this since childhood. So the situation may have seemed to have demanded immediate attention. However, the fact that the boy had been like this for a few years shows that it was not actually that urgent. Just because something or someone is demanding immediate attention does not necessarily mean that immediate attention is actually needed.
