23:3,4
Saul, and many of the kings after David, did not fear the Lord, and when this happened things were not good for Israel, both in direct terms in the way that the king ruled, and in the subsequent judgement of God upon the nation. Conversely when a ruler fears the Lord things go well. Again both in the way that the king rules, and in God’s blessing upon the land. We should pray that our rulers will fear the Lord and not be proud.
23:5
“If my house were not right with God ...” We know that there were many good things about David, but also not so good things. David was righteous up to a point, but it is only in Christ that we are truly righteous. God did make eternal promises to David. Our being justified by the cross is absolutely essential.
