Mark 8:32,33 - Get behind me Satan!

8:32

Peter was appalled at this idea, and clearly thinks that Jesus’ understanding needs to be corrected. A moment’s thought shows how ridiculous this is. Peter is seeking to correct the Son of God! Yet we all often think that we know better than God. Peter even rebukes Jesus.

8:33

Peter’s words were given out of ignorance, but behind them was the work of the devil. Peter was what Lenin termed a “useful idiot”. And any of us can fulfil that role when we too act or speak out of ignorance. So Jesus rebuked Peter sharply. Jesus recognised the words of the devil, and was having nothing to do with them. The final words, “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns” could be addressed to Satan or to Peter. We need to beware of looking at things from a purely human perspective, rather than from a God perspective.
