2 Samuel 24:5-10 - The number oif fighting men

24:5-9

We now get a description of the route that the army commanders took in order to count the fighting men. It took them just under ten months in total to carry out the task. At the end of it Joab reported that there were eight hundred thousand from Israel, and five hundred from Judah. So once again we see that division between Israel and Judah. After the time of Solomon this will be a key factor in the history of Israel.

24:10

After the task had been completed David was “conscience stricken”, realising what a foolish thing he had done. We can all probably identify with this. We commit a sin of one sort or another, are quite happy while doing the sin, but then realise how foolish we have been, wondering how we could have done such a thing. David’s response is to admit his guilt, with no excuse making, and to ask the Lord to take away his guilt.
