23:1
These are David’s “last words”, meaning not that they are the very last words before he died, but the last “official” words. It is significant that Moses, Jacob, Joshua and David all looked ahead in their “last words”. They knew that their life was not “it”, neither in the personal sense, nor in the grander sense of all of God’s plan, see 1 Pet 1:10-12.
David knew that his words were “inspired”. He was the “son of Jesse”, i.e. just an ordinary man, but he was anointed by God. He was also associated with the psalms, both as the writer and the subject of many of them. NIV has “the hero of Israel’s songs”. This last bit of verse 1 is translated in various ways by different versions. ESV, NASB and NKJV have “the sweetest psalmist of Israel”.
23:2
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me”. David was aware that God was speaking through him. It is noteworthy that the “theological” arguments in the New Testament letters often quote from the psalms, this is especially true in Hebrews.
