The father had a typically mixed attitude towards Jesus and God. He knew that Jesus cared, but was unsure if Jesus could, or perhaps wanted to, heal his son. We need to face up to the reality of this “problem”. We would all say that God can do anything, but when we are faced with a critical issue in our own life it is often difficult to believe that God will answer our specific needs. The man asks Jesus to have pity on them.

“If you can? Everything is possible for one who believes”. The dilemma that most or all of us face that I outlined in my comments on 9:22 is not meant to be the end place that we reach. It is a stage we go through, but Jesus’ words here indicate that we should be looking for something better.
