23:6,7
There, of course, many unrighteous rulers. 1 and 2 Kings will record the deeds of many of them, and they were cast aside. Thorns are not gathered by the hand because they are thorns, instead one uses a tool to handle them. God dealt with David on a personal level, but the evil kings were dealt with at arm's length.
23:8-12
We now get mention of “David’s mighty warriors”. It begins with the “three”, who were especially mighty. There are some ambiguities in the list, but that need not concern us. While David did many exploits himself, he was by no means a one-man-band. These three did highly significant exploits. At the same time it is made clear that their success was dependent upon the Lord. We are all dependent upon the Lord, and dependent on Him working through others. Losing sight of this is a starting point for going wrong.
