1:7,8
Adonijah even gained the support of Joab the commander of the army, and Abiathar the priest. They presumably saw David failing and knew that there needed to be a change of king. However, most of David’s inner circle did not join Adonijah. This included Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet.
1:9,10
Adonijah offered a sacrifice of sheep and cattle, and invited the king’s sons and royal officials. He seems to be repeating the mistake that Saul made. Adonijah knew that much of David’s inner circle were not supporting him, and so did not invite them. The list of non-invitees included Solomon, who, of course, would actually become king.
