9:14,15
We now come to the second of three healings in the second part of the book. Some teachers of the Law were arguing with the disciples. We are not told the details of what they were arguing about, and the further narrative pays no attention to the teachers of the Law. “As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder”. Now at this point Jesus hadn’t done anything here, so why were they “overwhelmed with wonder”? It would seem that Jesus’ reputation had spread so far and wide that there was such excitement at the very fact that He was there.
9:16-18
Jesus asked them what they were arguing about. It transpires that a man had brought his son to the remaining disciples, asking them to heal him. Remember that the disciples had been sent out (Mark 6:7-13) with power. So now the people are expecting Jesus’ disciples, not Jesus Himself, to heal people. The boy was possessed by an evil spirit, this spirit caused him to have fits. It is commonly assumed that the boy was having epileptic type fits, but the text, including the words of Jesus (9:25,26) clearly present this as the work of an evil spirit.
