9:6
Jesus then demonstrated one aspect of being the light of the world, opening the eyes of the blind. Jesus both physically opens the eyes of the blind, and spiritually opens the eyes of the blind. This should be an encouragement to us. For if God had never opened our eyes we would never have believed the gospel. Even if we have believed for many years, there is still so much that we do not see, or we need to see more clearly. Over time God will open our eyes, and one day we will see face to face. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud, and then anointed the man’s eyes with the mud. There are various interpretations put on this, ranging from the positive to the negative. If John had wished us to see a special meaning to this I suspect he would have highlighted it. So I will just take it as a description of what Jesus did.
9:7
One thing the mud did achieve was that it made sure the man would go to wash in the pool of Siloam, if only to get rid of the mud! Siloam means “sent”, so various interpretations can be drawn from this. Again, whether they are valid or not is debatable, the focus here is on the fact that the man was healed.
