Genesis 40:9-23 - Remember me!

40:9-15

First to go with his dream is the cupbearer. The dream of grapes and the cupbearer pressing them into Pharaoh’s cup is obviously signifying a return to his old job. The cupbearer’s job was to taste the wine before Pharaoh drank it, just in case it was poisoned. So it was quite a dangerous job! However, in three days time he would be reemployed. Joseph wants the cupbearer to remember him and mention him to Pharaoh. Joseph then gives a brief recount of how he ended up as a slave. Joseph seems to be feeling rather sorry for himself, which is quite understandable.

40:16-19

The baker was encouraged by what he heard Joseph say to the cupbearer, thinking he too was in for good news. However, this time it was far from good news! The only similarity was that things would happen in three days' time. However, baker was going to be hung on a tree and the birds of the air would eat his flesh. There was no need to ask the baker to remember him to Pharaoh!

40:20-23

Joseph’s interpretation of the two dreams turned out to be entirely accurate. So the baker was duly hanged and that was the end of him. The cupbearer was restored to his former position. However, the cupbearer did not remember Joseph. In such situations we can think that someone letting us down means that God’s plans for our life will not be fulfilled. This is not so, as we shall see in the next chapter.
