40:1-4
Joseph is now in the prison, and has been put in charge of everythingT He must have been wondering where his life was going, but God’s plans were progressing as they were meant to do. Two disgraced royal officials found their way into the same prison, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. They had committed some undisclosed offence against the king of Egypt. Whatever the offence was, Pharaoh was very angry with them and threw them into prison. The captain of the prison guard put them in Joseph’s charge.
40:5-8
God gave them both a dream. These were two separate dreams, each with a different interpretation. However, neither of the recipients were able to interpret their dreams. Many years later, Nebuchadnezzar received a dream that he could not interpret, and had to get Daniel to do so. Here Joseph will be the interpreter. Joseph noticed that the two royal officials (ex) were looking troubled and inquired as to why. He then tells them that interpretations come from God, and asks to be told the dreams.
