39:4-6
Joseph continued to do his work well and was given increased responsibilities and earned the trust of his master. The Lord also blessed the Egyptian’s house. We see here a difference in the effect that Joseph’s brothers had in chapter 34, which resulted in the death of many people. When God’s people work faithfully in step with the Spirit they are a blessing to the nation or location that they live in (this does not mean that persecution will never come). The crops were blessed as well (better than any fertility “god”!). So Potiphar gave Joseph charge over everything and knew that he did not need to worry about anything.
39:7-10
The enemy does not stand still, and now there is an attempt to overthrow Joseph. He was very handsome, and Potiphar’s wife fancied him, so she tried to get him to go to bed with her. We always need to be on our guard against temptation, even when we are clearly walking in faith. In fact, especially when we are walking in faith! However, Joseph was of a far better character than Judah (and the rest of his brothers) and he refused her advances. Joseph acted with integrity, knowing that his master trusted him. This temptation was not a one-off, but went on day after day, but Joseph continued to refuse her advances.
