John 10:4-6 - A stranger they will not follow

10:4

There are several points to be drawn from this verse. The first is that Jesus brings us out. God calls us out of the world. This is meant in the sense of not living under the world system, we are not called out in order to be hermits! We are called to be in the world but living under the lordship of Jesus Christ. Having called us out He leads us and we are to follow Him. “They know His voice”. Just as the sheep recognised the voice of their shepherd, so we are to recognise the voice of out shepherd.

10:5,6

We will not follow the voice of a stranger. Sometimes we can hear things that sound vaguely “Christian” but there is something “a bit off”. We should flee in such circumstances. The enemy puts on sheeps clothing, but he is a thief and a liar. Jesus was using a figure of speech, but “they did not understand”.
