9:13,14
The people take the man to the Pharisees. They may have been trying to keep in with the Pharisees, or they may have done this simply because everything was interpreted in religious terms, and the event was so unusual that they wanted to know what the religious leaders made of it. The incident had occurred on the Sabbath. This is the first we are told of this here. Lots of Jesus’ conflicts with the Pharisees involved the Sabbath, though the synoptics seem to place greater emphasis on this aspect than John does. Perhaps this is because John was writing at a later date.
9:15
The Pharisees now investigate the matter, asking the man to tell them what had happened. There were three areas where they would be concerned. Unless life was at risk, healing on the Sabbath was not allowed (in the Pharisees’ eyes). The making of the mud, and the putting mud on the man’s eyes could both count as “work”.
