John 9:28-31 - They hurled insults at him

9:28,29

The Pharisees are deeply offended by the suggestion that they might want to follow Jesus! They saw Jesus as a threat to them, and they hated Him. They were also very proud. So they remind the man that they are “disciples of Moses”. This was only true in their own eyes. If they had truly believed Moses and listened to him they would have recognised Jesus. Deut 18:15-18 is a clear messianic prophecy given by Moses. They call the man a disciple of Jesus, which was an insult as far as they were concerned. They knew that God had spoken to Moses. This much was true, though they failed to understand the teaching of Moses. They did not know where Jesus had come from. This again was true, but only because of their spiritual blindness.

9:30,31

The man is definitely getting quite uppity. He would be buoyed up by the fact that he could now see, after all these years, and by the stupidity of the Pharisees. The Pharisees were the “elite” of the day, but the elite can be incredibly stupid. So the man mocks the Pharisees for not knowing where Jesus came from. The fact that He had healed the blind man should have been something of a clue. Verse 31 is a theologically true statement. The man recognises that it was God who had healed him.
