Isaiah 19:11-17 - The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish

19:11-15
“The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; the wise counsellors of Pharaoh give senseless advice”. In the UK at present I am sure many of us think these words apply equally well to our own rulers! But getting back to the original context, the ecological collapse is accompanied by political collapse. Those in power in a nation seem to be in control, seem to know what they are doing, but there can come a time when they become utterly clueless.
“The Lord has poured into them a spirit of dizziness”. Again, one is tempted to speculate that this is what is happening to the UK (and possibly to the West in general). There has never been a time in my lifetime when both government and opposition have seemed to be so inept, so unfit for purpose. Why should this be? Well the nation has progressively rejected more and more of its Christian foundations, not realising the great debt it owes to Christianity for its culture, social structure and economic success. Now it is a positive disadvantage to be a Christian and to espouse Christian values. Is God judging the nation?

19:16,17

There now follow five “In that day”’s. The first involves the Egyptians become weaklings and being full of fear at the foe that the Lord has sent against them. Indeed, it is the land of Judah that will strike terror in the hearts of the Egyptians. So there will be a marked reversal of the normal state of affairs, which was Israel being afraid of Egypt. And the root of all this fear is what the Lord is planning to do against those who were Israel’s enemies (more strictly, Judah in the immediate context). The world spends much of its time mocking God’s people and planning things against them, but a time will come when all that will change. The practical implication of that for us is not one of gloating, but one of determining to remain faithful to the Lord despite whatever opposition or pressure we may be facing from the world.
