9:14
The scribes had taken the opportunity of Jesus’ absence to engage in argument with the remaining disciples, and Peter, James and John came down from the mountain into this situation. This is an experience that many of us are familiar with. We have a spiritual high of some sort, and then we come down to the grim realities of life, seemingly the same problems as were around before.
9:15-18
The crowds ran towards Jesus and were greatly amazed. It doesn’t tell us why they were amazed, maybe some of the “transfiguration glow” was still there? Jesus asked them what they were arguing about. One man explained that it was over the matter of his son. His son had fits because of an evil spirit. He had asked the disciples to heal his boy, but they had not been able to. Remember that earlier Jesus had sent the disciples out with the power to heal and set people free (Mark 6:13).
